A 1950’s film classic produced by Puerto Rico’s Division of Community Education (DivEdCo). A group of peasants from the town of Comerío decide to build a much needed school after listening to the story of 10 children from “Cielito” community that decided to work together to create a baseball league. More than 200 children from 1950’s Comerío participate in this film, as well as legendary actress Miriam Colón in one of her first professional appearances.

A documentary based on the 1950’s film production of Puerto Rico’s Division of Community Education (DivEdCo). This documentary revisits 50 years later five films and the five rural communities in which they were originally produced and interviews the “natural actors” of those films. Winner of the Pitirre Award for Best National Documentary in the San Juan Cinemafest 2006.

Book Presentation: An Anthology on Puerto Rican Poetry by Roberto Marquez

This volume offers the most wide-ranging and comprehensive collection of Puerto Rican poetry available in English. It includes the work of sixty-four poets, as well as many previously inaccessible selections from Puerto Rico’s tradition of popular verse forms-coplas, décimas, bombas-produced by anonymous writers. All are presented in English, contextualized and individually introduced by Roberto Marquez, a distinguished translator and literary scholar. Marquez will present his book, read excerpts and host a question and answer session. A short reception will follow.
